H.E.L.P Program Q & A

bracesWhat is the H.E.L.P Program?

The “how to eliminate live plaque” or H.E.L.P program educates individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment on the importance of daily brushing and flossing.

If you’re wearing braces or another type of fixed orthodontic appliance, like a retainer or palate expander, it’s essential to practice good oral hygiene. If you don’t, plaque, food particles, and harmful bacteria can collect on your teeth and beneath your gums, increasing the risk of potentially serious complications.

What does the H.E.L.P Program involve?

The H.E.L.P Program involves a multi-step process that begins with a comprehensive oral exam and checkup at Schoolhouse Orthodontics, LTD:

Step one- Removal of fixed orthodontic appliances

If Dr. Bolden notices a significant collection of plaque and tartar around your orthodontic appliance, she administers a local anesthetic and carefully removes the brackets, archwires, and other components from your teeth.

Step two - Step-by-step flossing instructions

After removing your fixed orthodontic appliance, Dr. Bolden explains (and demonstrates) how to properly floss your teeth. She walks you through the correct technique, illustrating how to access food particles and plaque from between your teeth and beneath your gums.

Step three - Antimicrobial rinse

Once you’ve learned how to floss correctly, Dr. Bolden rinses your mouth with a medical-grade antiseptic solution. The solution eliminates harmful bacteria from around your gums, preventing inflammation and encouraging your body’s natural healing process.

Step four - Step-by-step brushing instructions

Next, Dr. Bolden brushes your teeth with gritty toothpaste. Afterward, she walks you through the process of how to brush your teeth (and orthodontic appliance) at home. Carefully listen to her instructions, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to speak up.

Step five - Reapplication of orthodontic appliances

After your teeth and gums are completely free of plaque and tartar, Dr. Bolden reaffixes the orthodontic appliance to your teeth. Then, she sends you home with care instructions.

Who can benefit from the H.E.L.P Program?

Anyone undergoing orthodontic treatment who struggles to keep their teeth and gums clean can benefit from the H.E.L.P Program. Dr. Bolden works with each individual to ensure they have the information they need to achieve optimal oral health. She monitors your progress at each checkup to ensure your mouth remains problem-free.
